The BHSU Visual Arts Department in partnership with the Spearfish Arts Center is hosting “The Deadwood Songbook” concert featuring Hank Harris with Kenny Putnam and Ricky Jacobsen at the Matthews Opera House September 25, 2009 at 7 p.m.
There will be a social hour from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a cash bar and hors d’oeuvres. There will also be a silent art auction with approximately 20 artworks from both BHSU Visual Arts Department and the Spearfish Arts Center Gallery. The proceeds will be divided between the BHSU Art Student Scholarships and the Spearfish Arts Center for preservation of its programs and the Matthews Opera House.
From the dance halls and concert halls of 1880 Deadwood comes the music of an era. Between 1876, when Deadwood began as a raucous mining camp, and 1900 when the town had evolved into a bastion of respectability, attending a musical performance was a major social activity.
Hank Harris, Kenny Putnam and Ricky Jacobsen revive classic American songs like Dixie, John Henry, Yankee Doodle, Cielito Lindo and The Dreary Black Hills. The songs are rendered faithfully on traditional instruments of the day. Harris tells stories throughout the evening about each of the selections.
Tickets for the concert are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. They can be purchased at The Spearfish Arts Center Gallery. For more information call 642-7973.
