Women's College Basketball
The Black Hills State University women's basketball team met up with Northern New Mexico for the second time this season. The Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they finished with the 62-42 victory on Saturday in Denver here on 980 AM KDSJ.
The Yellow Jacket defense was tenacious in the first half, allowing only 17 points from the Eagles. Black Hills State pulled away behind a 42% shooting performance in the first half to secure a 31-17 lead at the break. The Yellow Jackets were able to build on the lead through the second half on the way to their fourth straight win by more than 20 points.
Black Hills State was led offensively by senior Kristi Ryan who was lights out from behind the arc. Ryan netted five three pointers on her way to 22 total points. Another notable contribution on the offensive end of the court came via freshman Chelsey Biegler who finished with 14 points. Biegler also added a team high five assists.
The Yellow Jackets will host Minot State on February 10 at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. and can be heard here on 980 AM KDSJ.

Men's College Basketball
The Black Hills State University men's basketball team met up with Northern New Mexico for the second consecutive weekend. This time the Yellow Jackets met up with the Eagles on a neutral floor in Denver right here on KDSJ. The Yellow Jackets were able to keep the Eagles winless on the season as they coasted to an 82-69 win, to advance to 8-12 on the season.
The Yellow Jackets took a 17 point lead into intermission leading the Eagles 34-17 after the first frame. Black Hills State shot 43% from the floor, 30% from behind the arc and 68% from the free throw line for the game. The Yellow Jackets had five players net double digit points in the winning effort.
Black Hills State was led offensively by senior Rob Johnson who scored 19 points and pulled in 10 rebounds for another double-double. Freshman Joey Mitchell added 13 points, junior Tommy Earl and freshman Brody Brisk each added 12 points and sophomore Kevin Hanes chipped in 10 points off the bench.

Women's College Basketball
The Black Hills State University women's basketball team fell to South Dakota School of Mines by a score of 61-52 Tuesday night in a game heard here on KDSJ. The Yellow Jackets trailed throughout the game and were unable to overcome the strong offensive performance from the Hardrockers as they fell to 5-11 on the season.
Black Hills State was unable to get anything going early as Mines jumped out to an early 10-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets weathered the storm as they entered the halftime break trailing the Hardrockers 32-23. The Yellow Jacket women rallied in the second half cutting the lead to just four points with less than ten minutes remaining in the game. However, a few late baskets by the Rockers were enough to pull away in the end.
Black Hills State was led by sophomore Jordan Kent who finished the contest with nine points and four rebounds. The Yellow Jacket rally was led by sophomore Calli Bechtel who contributed off of the bench. Bechtel was one of three Yellow Jackets to net eight points along with senior Bayley Chevron and freshman Dakota Barrie. Freshmen Cassidy Kotelman had a strong outing for Black Hills State. Kotelman finished the contest with seven points and eight rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday, January 27 as they return home to host Northern New Mexico at the Donald E. Young Center in Spearfish. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and can be heard right here on your home for the Yellow Jackets, 980 AM KDSJ!
Men's College Basketball
The Black Hills State University men's basketball team rolled past rival South Dakota School of Mines by a score of 76-60 Tuesday night in a game heard on KDSJ. The Yellow Jackets snapped a six game losing streak and improved to 5-11 on the season.
"I thought we put together a 40 minute game tonight," said Head Coach Bradd Schafer. "I give a lot of credit to our young guys, give credit to Tech, they cut our lead to ten, but we worked hard and were able to stretch that lead back to 15 to end the game. Defensively we had a great team effort. We held them to 60 points and anytime you do that you give yourself a good shot to win the game."
Black Hills State had a strong night offensively as they shot 45% from the floor for the game and 41% from behind the arc. They also hauled in three more rebounds than the Hardrockers. The Yellow Jackets had a strong first half as they took a 40-24 lead going into intermission; each team scored 36 points in the second frame.
Black Hills State's offense was firing on all cylinders throughout the game. The Yellow Jackets were led by Rob Johnson and Tommy Earl who each scored 17 points. Freshmen Brody Brisk and Joey Mitchell each added 11 points. Johnson also finished the game pulling down nine rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Friday, January 27 as they host Northern New Mexico at the Young Center in Spearfish. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. here on KDSJ!
