As the 2014 High School Girls Golf season came to an end last week, so did the tenure for a Scooper coach. The Meade School District has announced that Joe Shetler has resigned as the Sturgis Scooper Head Girls Golf coach after 11 seasons. His resignation was approved at the May 13 school board meeting. His successor has also been approved. Haley Davenport will take over as the head coach, beginning next school year. Brooke Ireland of Sturgis Brown High School was the female recipient of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Gold Medal Scholarship, which was awarded earlier this month. Each year, the scholarship committee selects one male and one female student-athlete participating in track and field at a South Dakota High School who are committed to continue the sport at the collegiate level.

Ireland was given a $1,000 scholarship. She is a six-time varsity letter winner in track and field at SBHS. At last year's state meet she won the 400-meters. She has the sixth fastest 400 time in South Dakota history in a blazing 55.88 seconds. Scoopers Name New Girls Basketball Coach

Posted by A-Cody on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 (06:15:03)

The Sturgis Scoopers have announced the hiring of Jordan (Stapp) Proefrock to take over the varsity girls basketball program.

Proefrock replaces Mike Freidel, who is stepping down after 22-years at the helm. Proefrock, like Freidel, is from Newell, and spent two years as an assistant coach with him.

Proefrock will leave her coaching position at Lead-Deadwood, where she really turned around the girls basketball program there. She credits the great administrative guidance she received.

The former Newell Irrigator standout is faced with taking over a Sturgis team losing a very talented senior class, including Kahlie Peterson, Lynsey Prosser and Errin Short. However, she looks forward to the challenge that lies ahead.

Sturgis Boys and Girls Basketball Coaches Resign

Posted by A-Cody on Monday, April 14, 2014 (23:20:58)

Sturgis Scooper varsity basketball will have a different look next year.

Both varsity girls and boys basketball coaches tendered resignations at the Tuesday, April 8 Meade School Board meeting.

Scooper girls coach Mike Freidel had hinted earlier in the season he was considering a change. Scooper boys head coach Orion Thompson's resignation came as a surprise.

Meade School Superintendent Don Kirkegaard said that Thompson is actively pursuing a position in administration in other districts.

Kirkegaard says Thompson will remain with the district during his search. Thompson coached the Scooper boys for five seasons and led them to the State AA Tournament in Rapid City where they finished in 8th place and a record of 14-12.

Coach Freidel, meanwhile, felt the time was right to move on. Freidel says he will remain with the district, and entertain the possibility of coaching at the lower level.

During his 22-year tenure as head coach, Freidel has coached great players like Megan Mahoney, now a professional basketball player for an Italian team, Carsey Barden, and this year's dynamic duo of Kahlie Peterson and Lynsey Prosser. The Scoopers finished the 2013-2014 season with a record of 18-7 and took home the fourth place trophy at the State AA Tournament held last month in Brookings.
