Post 31 Goes 2-2 At Parkston Tourney
By Mark Watson
The Lead/Deadwood Legion baseball team split this weekend's Parkston Tournament 2-2 and learned that they are able to play against some of the top teams in the region.
"We're pleased going 2-2 in the tournament," said Post 31 coach Jim Startz. "We came away from the tournament learning that we are actually a really good team."
The local team faced Freeman, S.D. in their first game and won 11-9. "Ben Bartling pitched a heck of a game. It was a real good game played by both teams," Startz said. Bartling went 3-4 from the plate and Russel Hadden went 2-4.
Game 2 marked the first loss of the tourney with Lead/Deadwood falling 11-4 to Waterloo Valley, Nebraska.
For the third game Post 31 took on the hometown team of Parkston. "They pretty much gave it to us," Startz said. They beat us 14-1. "That was at 9 Sunday morning, after we finished at 11 Saturday night. There were just too many cobwebs."
The final game of the tournament was against Gering, Nebraska and Post 31 took the victory 7-4. "It was another well played ball game," he said. "Russel Hadden pitched a heck of a game. He kept batters off balance the whole game."
After the tournament, Lead/Deadwood Post 31 is now 13-10 on the season. They next play at Hot Springs on Tuesday.

Late Rally Lifts Sturgis Past Hot Springs
STURGIS — Sturgis Post 33 scored three runs late in the game to come from behind and defeat Hot Springs 5-4 Tuesday night at Strong Field.
Trailing 4-2 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and runners in scoring position, the Titans were able to even things up when Kasidy Huffman scored from third on a wild pitch and Trevor Potts scored from second after an errant throw back to the pitcher.
In the bottom of the eighth, Gable Gillette hit a groundball to short and was safe at first, allowing Seth Lange to score Sturgis’ winning run from second base.
The Titans used four different pitchers, using Alan McMillin to start the game and ending with Lange.
“Alan McMillin had good command of his pitches and had one his better outings as far as locating all of his pitches,†said Sturgis head coach Nic Ewing.
The Titans (5-7 overall) travel to Omaha to face Chaos Blue from Colorado Thursday at 2:30 p.m. followed by Omaha Central at 5 p.m.

Lead-Deadwood Routs Belle Fourche
By Dennis Knuckles
BELLE FOURCHE - Lead-Deadwood used a potent offensive attack and strong pitching from Jordan Leveque and Derrik Fossen to soundly beat Belle Fourche 17-1 Tuesday night in Belle Fourche.
Post 31 exploded for 13 runs in the first two innings to put the game on ice. The 10 run rule was enforced after five innings.
Leveque pitched a masterful game, striking out 10 of the 12 batters he faced before giving way to Fossen in the fifth.
Post 31 Coach Jim Startz said he was tempted to let Leveque go for the no-hitter, but said the risk outweighed the reward.
“I would have left him (Leveque) in to finish it up, but it's not worth it (getting Leveque hurt),†said Startz.
After the game Leveque said he was in command of all his pitches.
“I felt like I was pitching pretty hard. My curve ball was working well,†said Leveque
When asked if he would have liked to have gotten the chance to throw the no-hitter Leveque smiled and said,†Yeah, definitely, but Fossen pitched well (in relief).â€
Jake Zoodsma had two hits and drove in two runs to lead the Post 31 attack.

Bartling Fans 10 Batters In Win
By Mike Besso, Lawrence County Journal
STURGIS — Ben Bartling limited Sturgis to four hits and struck out 10 Titans hitters, as Lead-Deadwood captured a 4-3 win in American Legion baseball game Saturday at Strong Field.
The game was a late addition to the schedule when the Freedom Tournament was cancelled.
“Bartling pitched a whale of a game,†said Lead-Deadwood manager Jim Startz.
The two teams were deadlocked at 3-3 after six innings of play. In the top half of the seventh, Lead-Deadwood’s Ben Morris was hit by a pitch and Russ Hadden survived on an error. Both runners moved up a base on a double steal. Morris came home on a fly ball by Jake Startz for the game’s winning run.
Lead-Deadwood began the scoring in the first inning. Morris stroked a leadoff single. The Sundance, Wyo., athlete eventually scored on an errant throw to the second baseman. Morris is one of four Sundance players on the Lead-Deadwood squad.
Kasidy Huffman’s two-run, triple in the bottom half of the third inning presented Post 33 with a 2-1 advantage. Sturgis extended its lead to 3-1 in the home half of the fourth when Gable Gillett delivered a run-scoring single.
Post 31 sliced the deficit in half, plating one run in the top of the fifth. A bases loaded walk to Jake Startz forced in a run. Zach Startz led off the visitors’ sixth, enticing a base on balls. He later scored on an error, knotting the score at 3-3.
Morris scored two runs and had two hits for Lead-Deadwood. Hadden, Bartling and Zach Startz managed one hit each.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for Lead-Deadwood. Post 31 lost two games each earlier this week during a road trip to Chamberlain and Elk-Point-Jefferson.
“When we play well and hit the ball well, we are a tough team to beat,†Startz said. “We played well up and down the lineup. It was nice to see all the pieces fit together today.â€
Gillett led Sturgis with a pair of hits. Kasidy and Brandon Huffman notched one hit apiece.
Kasidy Huffman pitched the initial three innings. Alan McMillin threw the next two innings. Casey Hanzlik absorbed the mound setback, pitching the final two innings.
“Lead-Deadwood came ready to play and we came out flat and went through the motions,†Sturgis manager Nic Ewing said.
“They just wanted it more than we did.â€
Lead-Deadwood visits Belle Fourche in a doubleheader Tuesday. Sturgis hosts Hot Springs in a nine-inning game on Tuesday.

Spearfish Downs Sturgis Behind Pitching
By Jason Gross, Meade County Times
STURGIS — Dustin Wisener pitched Spearfish to a 4-3 American Legion baseball victory over Sturgis at Strong Field on Friday night.
The right-hander hurled all nine innings and scattered five hits. He walked four batters and struck out three.
Spearfish (6-10 overall) took the lead for good in the eighth on Ryan Royer’s two-out single. Jess Cooper and Wisener dashed home to put Post 164 ahead 4-3. Wisener faced the minimum six batters the rest of the way, inducing four groundouts and a fly out. One of those groundouts resulted in a double play to end the eighth inning.
Spearfish struck first in the fourth inning when Wisener lofted a sacrifice fly to deep center field. Jordan Johnson trotted home for the 1-0 edge. Alan McMillin plated Sturgis’ equalizer in the fifth on Eli Bueno’s single. McMillin was on third base when the two-out hit was struck. Wisener put Spearfish ahead 2-1 in the sixth when he came home on Royer’s RBI single.
Sturgis, which had its record fall to 4-5, loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth. Seth Lange scored on a bases-loaded walk to pull the Titans into a 2-2 tie. A lineout and fielder’s choice kept the bases loaded with two outs. The next batter, Bryan Cooley, drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Kasidy Huffman and give Sturgis a 3-2 edge.
Wisener’s two-run, one-hit effort complemented his pitching performance. Royer laced two of Spearfish’s hits.
Casey Hanzlik, the second of two Sturgis pitchers, was tagged with the loss. Lange scored one run and added a hit. Andy Jones contributed two hits.
“Dustin pitched one heck of a game,†Spearfish manager Matt Kemp said. He added the squad survived four errors, and Wisener excelled in throwing first-pitch strikes.
“We are starting to jell,†Kemp said. “You can tell that by looking at the kids. We also had timely hitting tonight.â€
Sturgis manager Nic Ewing said the game was clean and very well-played. He added the pitchers set the tone for the contest, which ended with the sides combining for only 11 hits. Ewing praised Wisener’s effort and added, “He worked fast. He worked off his fastball. There wasn’t a lot of trickery. He made it work all game.â€

Open Enrollment Sports Limit Rejected
South Dakota high school officials have rejected a proposal that would have required student athletes to sit out one year if they switch schools through the 1997 state open enrollment law.
South Dakota High School Activities Association bylaws amendments need 60 percent approval. This one received just 48 percent.
In 1998, 71 students switched school districts for sports reasons. The total shot to 235 in 1999, prompting SDHSAA to establish a rule that allows students to open enroll only once during high school and still be eligible for sports.
Last year, 174 student athletes transferred to schools in other districts without moving to those communities.

Spartans Head Wrestling Coach Headed To St Thomas More
St. Thomas More has a new wrestling coach and it is a name Black Hills area wrestling fans should be familiar with. The Cavaliers have hired Nick Durham to be its head coach, replacing Bo Secrest who moved to a new job in Washington state. Durham comes to St. Thomas More after spending three years as the head coach in Spearfish.
"I look forward to the opportunities and challenges of building a wrestling program at St. Thomas More that their school and the community of Rapid City can be proud of," Durham said. "This move to More also allows me to be near my wife, Jennifer, and our three kids since we have lived in Rapid City the past three years.
While at Spearfish, Durham coached one state champion, a runner-up and four other state place winners. Before coaching Spearfish, Durham was a middle school wrestling coach in Colorado for two years.

Searching For A Successor
By Padraic Duffy
The search for a new activities director at Rapid City Stevens is moving along slowly but surely.
“There isn’t really much to say about it right now,†Rapid City assistant superintendent Katie Bray said of the search. “The interview process is still under way and it’s against our personnel regulations to say who those interviewees are. But we are in the process of finding a new activities director at Stevens and are trying to fill the position as soon as possible.â€
The position opened up earlier this year when former activities director Paul Sterling announced that this year would be his last in the position at the school. Sterling has worked at Stevens since 1998, when he took over for longtime activities director Duane Whalen.
Sterling has overseen numerous state championship-winning programs in his tenure at the school in boys cross country, track and field, golf, tennis and wrestling and girls’ track and field, cross country, volleyball, golf, tennis and gymnastics. The Raiders won 2008 state championships in girls track and field — their 13th straight title, which tied a national record — wrestling, boys tennis and volleyball. Sports Illustrated called Stevens the No. 1 high school sports program in South Dakota in a 2005 article.
The search for a new AD is currently in the hands of Stevens principal John Julius and a seven-member search committee. The committee is conducting interviews for the position and will turn over its recommendation for the job to the superintendent Peter Wharton’s office for review.
Wharton will then review the committee’s recommendation and possibly conduct another interview of the candidate or candidates before submitting his recommendation to the school board for a vote. The school board will actually make the hire.
“We’re still in the process of interviewing candidates,†Bray said. “Then there will be reference checks and possibly another interview before the board has final approval. It’s quite a process but the position carries a great deal of responsibility. Once Mr. Julius completes his team they’ll get right into things, but it’s a huge job and they need to find the right candidate.â€
