High School Wrestling

A West River team didn't win the Rapid City Invitational, but plenty of them crowded their way into the top five.

Led by an impressive charge through the consolation brackets, Rapid City Stevens finished in second place, followed by Sturgis in third and Rapid City Central was fifth.

However, it was Gillette, WY that claimed its first Rapid City title by 10.5 points.

Sturgis put itself in a great position on Saturday beginning the day with seven semifinalists in Cody Cassen (119), Morgan Engbrecht (119), Tanner Bothwell (125), Jake Dekraai (135), Terrence Maier (189), Clint Wilson (215), and Chris Vinson (285).

Spearfish-Lead-Deadwood has a pair of semifinalists in Nick Montieth (140) and Nate Rotert (189).

The Rapid City Stevens wrestling team holds a four-point lead over Bismarck, North Dakota, after the first day of the Mandan (ND) Lions Invitational.

The Raiders have 94 points and five undefeated wrestlers still going heading into Saturday's final rounds of action.

Defending tournament champion Sturgis is in third place with 73.5 points. Morgan Engbrecht (119), Tanner Bothwell (125), Jake Dekraai (135), David Jackson (145), Kaiden White Bear (171), Terrance Maier (189), Clint Wilson (215) and Chris Vinson (285) all made it through the first day unscathed.

Rapid City Central is in fifth place with 26 points in the 12-team tournament. The two-day tournament concludes Saturday.

   High School Football: Tri-Champions Lead Way On All-BHC


Black Hills Conference tri-champions St. Thomas More, Hot Springs and Belle Fourche led the way with all-conference football selections.

The three teams finished with matching 4-1 conference marks. The conference race came down to the final week of the regular season before the three teams ended up splitting the title.

Belle Fourche's four senior representatives are Trevor Melum, Tedd Leipold, Cameron Carlson, and Jeff Burns. Junior Austin Kudlock rounded out the Broncs' selections.

Lead-Deadwood finished the conference season with a 1-4 mark and was represented by seniors Danny Johnson and Xavier Glover.

   High School Football: Area All-GDC Team


The All-Greater Dakota Conference Football team was released this week.

Sturgis quarterback Joey Olson, running back-linebacker Clint Wilson and linebacker Tanner Urbaniak represented the Scoopers on the all-conference first team, while sophomore running back-linebacker Nate Rotert and senior Austin Sprynczynatyk were honored from the Spearfish team.

West River honorable mentions included: Cade Weber, Baker Diede, Luke McFarland, Luke Marcoe of Spearfish. Bryan Cooley, Jake Dekraai, Kyle Henke, Joel Hermann and Brad McArthur of Sturgis.

   Sturgis Brown High School Fall Athletic Banquet


The Sturgis Brown High School Fall Athletic Banquet will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, November 22 in the East Gym at Sturgis Brown High School.

The S-Club and the Sturgis Booster Club will be providing spaghetti, salad, bread and drink.

The following activities will be recognized: cheer, Black Magic, girls' tennis, boys' golf, cross country, football, volleyball, softball and soccer.

Athletes (Varsity/JV) and parents are encouraged to attend.

Athletes are asked to bring a dessert.
