Four SDHSAA State Golf Meets Tee Off Monday

The South Dakota High School Activities Association's final four Golf State Tournaments will tee off Monday at four courses on the eastern half of the state. This year's competitions are scheduled as two-day, thirty-six hole events, with the 'AA' Girls in Yankton at Hillcrest Golf and Country Club, the 'A' Girls in Milbank at Pine Hills Golf Course. Class B will be split between two sites in Brookings--Brookings Country Club for the boys and Edgebrook Golf Course hosting the girls.

In Class 'AA' competition, the field is led by the return of the top four finishers from the 2012 event--medalist Hallie Getz (Pierre), runner-up Megan Mingo (Yankton), third-place finisher Kristen Sabers (Mitchell) and fourth-place finisher Haliee Pieper (Watertown). This foursome will begin Monday's play paired together as a result of conference-tournament qualifying. Sioux Falls O'Gorman, meanwhile, is the defending 'AA' champion and will be seeking their fourth consecutive State Golf Team Title.

The Class 'A' field features seven of the top ten individual finishers from the 2012 meet--including Sydney Bormann of Parkston who captured medalist honors as an 8th Grader last year in a playoff over Cassidy Vollmer of Hot Springs. Each of last year's top five teams are back in 2013, including Defending Team Champion Parkston, who will be looking for their third team title in five years.

Each of the 2013 Class B fields feature a pair of individual golfers highlighting the field after fighting it out for medalist honors in a playoff last year. Defending Medalists Aaron Lickteig of Freeman and Tara Nihart of James Valley Christian will look to repeat as champions, with runner-ups Cal Wiese of Howard and Shauni Schwartz of Herreid leading the pack of challengers. Defending Team Champions South Central (Girls) and White River (Boys) have both qualified for this year's event and look to capture consecutive team titles.

Keep it here on 980 AM KDSJ for results of area competitors Monday-Wednesday.

The Romance And Reality Of Deadwood

The Romance and Reality of Deadwood’s past will be the focus of a two-day academic summer camp to be held May 30 and 31, 2013, and sponsored by Black Hills State University (BHSU). It is open to students, entering 8th grade or higher, and their parents (or grandparents). The camp will be led by Dr. David Wolff, BHSU professor of history and dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and Kelly Kirk, BHSU instructor of history. Through walking tours, driving explorations and classroom discussions, these two Western history specialists will explore many aspects of Deadwood’s history, including why the town survived when so many other Western boomtowns disappeared, who made up Deadwood’s social fabric, how violent was Deadwood compared to other Western towns, and how Deadwood changed over time. Students will hike up Deadwood’s Main Street, through Mt. Moriah Cemetery, and to the Roosevelt Tower on Mt. Roosevelt. Surrounding gold camps will also be visited in order to place Deadwood within the context of the Black Hills gold rush. The camp will culminate at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (HARCC) with discussions on historical research and historic preservation activities in Deadwood.

The cost for the two-day camp is $100 and includes two lunches, snacks, and some transportation. If lodging is required, participants must make their own arrangements. This camp involves moderate physical activity, and comfortable walking or hiking shoes are a must. For more information, a more detailed schedule breakdown, or to sign up, please go to www.BHSU.edu/summercamps or contact Hasina Ahmad at 605.642.6427 or Hasina.Ahmad@BHSU.edu or Dr. David Wolff at 605.642-6221. (The camp requires a minimum enrollment to run, but space is limited. Please register early!)
