A Letter From Deadwood Mayor David Ruth, Jr.

Thursday, October 29, 2020

To the residents, business owners, employees, and visitors of Deadwood, South Dakota:

Recently, the South Dakota State Medical Association issued a statement regarding the importance of wearing masks. This association consists of the three major medical providers in our state, as well as the other associations represented in the healthcare industry of South Dakota. In their statement, they recognized that in order to keep South Dakota open, we all need to practice good hygiene, social distancing, and wear masks. It is for this reason, that I ask everyone to do their part and help each other by masking up.

“The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has affirmed that wearing masks can help communities slow the spread of COVID-19 when worn consistently and correctly by a majority of people in public settings.” (Avera Health)

Due to recent increases in COVID-19 positive cases in Lawrence County and across the state, it is important to remember that we need to exercise our personal responsibility. South Dakotans have always looked out for their neighbors and communities. This is why I know that I can ask you for your help today.

The City of Deadwood’s public facilities will continue to require masks in their buildings. I encourage businesses to continue to provide safe environments for employees and guests, alike. In challenging times, everyone has a role. Some roles are complex and some roles are simple. If we all do our part, we can get through this together.

“We take care of our communities by taking care of one another.” #MaskUpSoDak #MaskUpDeadwood

Stay safe and thank you for your help,

David R. Ruth, Jr., Mayor
