ACLU Sues South Dakota Over Vanity Plate Law

The ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) is suing South Dakota over its vanity plate law. The state can turn a driver down if it finds a personalized plate to be offensive or “in poor taste.” But the ACLU is saying the rule infringes on the free speech rights of all South Dakotans. A lawsuit was filed Monday on behalf of Lynn “Smokey” Hart, whose application for “REZWEED” plates was denied on June 6th of last year. He wanted to promote his business Rez Weed Indeed, which advocates the legal selling and use of marijuana on Native American reservations.
