Winter Has Arrived For The 2022-2023 Season

Local law enforcement and the South Dakota Highway Patrol were busy this Wednesday, November 9th, morning responding to accidents due to very icy roadways.

Ahead of snow and wind expected to affect the area tonight, a bout of freezing rain and drizzle hit the area this morning, putting a glaze of ice on roads.

Law enforcement in Sturgis, Rapid City and Spearfish were busy with a handful of accidents being reported.

On I-90, the highway patrol was also busy responding to vehicles that had slid off the icy highway. The patrol reported accidents at Mile Markers 54, 55 and 78

Road crews were out, but the freezing drizzle kept falling through the morning hours keeping roads slick.

A winter weather advisory for the area goes back into effect tonight for snow and blowing snow, and a winter storm warning goes into effect for areas north of Belle Fourche. Gusty northerly winds will develop late tonight into Thursday which will create areas of blowing snow and greatly reduced visibilities where accumulating snow falls.
