Updates To Black Hills State Training Department

The Black Hills State University athletic training office announced some updates with Shaun Skavang taking over as the head of the sports medicine team and Baylee Johnson joining the team as an athletic trainer.

After joining the Black Hills State athletic training team in 2019, Shaun Skavang moved into the Head Athletic Trainer position in November 2023. He oversees the entire BH sports medicine team and serves as the primary athletic trainer for the Yellow Jacket football and men’s basketball programs.

Skavang earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Minnesota State University-Mankato in 2011 and earned his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 2013.

A 2021 graduate of BHSU, Baylee Johnson returns to her alma mater as an athletic trainer, beginning her duties with the Yellow Jackets in January 2024.

Prior to coming back to Black Hills State, she worked as an assistant athletic trainer at fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) institution in Colorado Mesa since August 2023, working primarily with the Maverick football team.

She earned her Master of Science in Athletic Training degree from Old Dominion University (Norfolk, Va.) where she worked on the campuses of Virginia Wesleyan University and Christopher Newport University.
