Belle Fourche’s bid for a dramatic overtime victory came up just one-yard short Thursday night, as the Broncs fell 21–20 to Rapid City Christian at Lou Graslie Field. The loss drops Belle Fourche to 3–6 to finish the season and marks the second consecutive defeat to the Comets. With the win, Rapid City Christian qualifies for the 8th and final spot in the Class 11A playoffs.
After the game was tied 14–14 to end regulation, Rapid City Christian scored on a touchdown run, converting the PAT to take a 21-14 lead. On the ensuing Broncs possession, Belle Fourche responded with a 5-yard touchdown run, but the Broncs’ two-point attempt—an aggressive call by head coach Sean Sweet—was stopped just shy of the goal line.
Rapid City Christian improves to 5–4, winning five of their last six games. The Comets will travel to top-seeded Sioux Falls Christian for the First Round of the Class 11A Playoffs. This game will be the second time these two teams have played, as the Chargers defeated the Comets 48-21 back in week two.
Belle Fourche, meanwhile, will finish the season 3-6, but the future is bright for a Bronc team that achieved the most wins in a season in the past three years.
