Spearfish (20–12) travels to Mitchell (15–8) on Thursday, Nov. 13, for a Class AA SoDak 16 showdown with a state tournament berth on the line. First serve is set for 6:00 p.m. at Mitchell High School.
The matchup marks a rematch of their Oct. 4 meeting, where Mitchell swept Spearfish 25–21, 25–20, 25–17. In that contest, the Kernels capitalized on 27 Spartan hitting errors while committing just 10 of their own. Mitchell also held a 10–5 edge in service aces and out-blocked Spearfish 10–4.
Mitchell enters the postseason with a balanced attack, featuring five players with over 100 kills: Audrey Miller (198), Addie Siemsen (170), Nia Talley (152), Kambyl Wede (117), and Charleigh Collins (116). Siemsen, the team’s setter, leads in hitting percentage (.296) and set assists (543), and ranks among the top defenders with 231 digs and 70 blocks. The Kernels have totaled 199 service aces this season, led by Siemsen (46), Talley (44), Kenna Soulek (40), and Cassidy Korzan (31).
Spearfish counters with standout senior Adelyn Bouman, who leads the team with 302 kills and 45 aces. Setter Kali Reiners has distributed 810 assists and added 230 digs. Sophomore Julia Billington has contributed 253 kills with a team-best .295 hitting efficiency. Tabatha Zandstra leads the team in blocks (52), while Faith Hoffman anchors the back row with 331 digs.
The Spartans have recorded 1,002 kills, 218 total blocks, and 1,424 digs this season. Their serving game has produced 212 aces with an 81.1% efficiency. Spearfish’s recent form includes wins over Douglas, Rapid City Central, and Brookings, and a competitive loss to Rapid City Stevens.
Historically, Mitchell leads the series 6–2 since 2021. Spearfish’s last win came in October 2024, a 3–1 victory. The winner of Thursday’s match will advance to the Class AA State Volleyball Tournament in the Monument, Rapid City.
