The Spearfish Lady Spartans (1-0) opened their season in commanding fashion Friday night, defeating Black Hills Conference rival Belle Fourche (1-1) by a score of 50–38.
Spearfish wasted no time setting the tone, racing out to a 21–3 lead after the first quarter and holding the Broncs to single-digit scoring in three of the four periods.
Senior standout Kate Scharf led all scorers with 23 points, including 14 in the opening quarter. The Spartans also unveiled a new-look starting lineup, with Kali Reiners, Tiersyn Grubb, and Taylor Vitto stepping into roles vacated by last season’s graduates. Defensively, Spearfish applied relentless pressure, forcing turnovers and keeping Belle Fourche’s offense in check throughout the contest.
Junior guard Anna Eisenbarth made an impressive varsity debut, contributing 8 points and showing promise as a reliable option off the bench for head coach Dakota Johnson.
Belle Fourche was paced by Reagan Hatling, who finished with 11 points—the only Bronc in double figures. While the offense struggled to find rhythm, the Broncs displayed toughness on the boards and defensive grit, contesting shots and forcing turnovers during stretches of the second and third quarters.
Fouls proved to be a storyline, with four players—two from each team—fouling out. Three others finished with four fouls, underscoring an area both squads will look to clean up as the season progresses.
The Spartans will look to build on their strong start with back-to-back home games against Class AA opponents next week. Aberdeen Central visits Friday night, followed by the Pierre Lady Governors on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live on KDSJ-TV via YouTube and Facebook.
Belle Fourche, now 1-1, travels to Phillip on Tuesday to face the Scottys.
