The Spearfish Lady Spartans face one of their toughest challenges of the young season tonight as they welcome the No. 5 Aberdeen Central Golden Eagles to Spearfish High School. The matchup brings together two programs with contrasting styles, recent postseason history, and a rivalry that has produced several memorable finishes.
Spearfish enters the game at 1–0 under fifth‑year head coach Dakota Johnson, coming off a strong 50–33 win over Belle Fourche last week. Senior guard Kate Scharf powered the Spartans with 23 points—14 of them in the first half—as Spearfish opened the game on a dominant 21–3 run and held the Broncs to single‑digit scoring in three of four quarters.
The Spartans return significant senior leadership, though not as much returning production. Scharf and senior guard Ady Bouman are the only returning starters, with Scharf serving as the primary scoring threat. Seniors Kali Reiners, Tiersyn Grubb, and Taylor Vitto have all stepped into starting roles this season, bringing experience but new responsibilities.
Reiners takes over at point guard and has shown improved confidence in handling the ball. Her ability to shoot from the perimeter will be crucial as opponents key in on Scharf. Grubb, one of the team’s most relentless defenders, will play a major role tonight as Spearfish prepares to battle Aberdeen Central’s imposing frontcourt of Lauren Burckhard and Taryn Hermansen.
Spearfish’s bench features promising young contributors, including Anna Eisenbarth and Avery Raterkus, who will be counted on to provide energy and depth. For the Spartans to compete with Aberdeen Central’s size, they will need to generate turnovers, hit outside shots, and win the guard matchups to prevent the Golden Eagles from feeding their dominant post players.
Aberdeen Central arrives in Spearfish with a 2–0 record and the look of a state title contender. Under second‑year head coach Paiton Burckhard, the Golden Eagles return their entire roster from last season and feature six seniors who play significant minutes. They opened the year with a 53–32 win over Rapid City Central and followed it with a 56–44 victory over then‑No. 4 Rapid City Stevens.
Burckhard’s younger sister, Lauren Burckhard, leads the team in scoring and rebounding and is one of the most versatile players in Class AA. Hermansen, who is committed to competing in college track and field, anchors the paint and creates matchup problems with her size and strength. While Aberdeen’s guards are experienced, they are still developing confidence as outside shooters—an area Spearfish may try to exploit.
Coach Burckhard expects another tight contest between the two programs. “The last two games have been thrillers,” she said. “They eliminated us in the SoDak 16 two years ago, and we had another great game in 2OT last season. We play vastly different styles—Spearfish is more guard‑heavy, while we are more post‑heavy. It really isn’t a good matchup for either of us, so it makes for a good game.”
Aberdeen Central leads the series 13–1 since 2007. Spearfish’s lone win came last March, a 72–48 SoDak 16 victory that sent the Spartans to the state tournament. Last season’s regular‑season meeting ended in a 66–64 Aberdeen win in double overtime.
For Spearfish, the keys will be forcing turnovers, preventing paint touches, and maintaining efficient offensive possessions. Aberdeen Central will look to limit turnovers, control the boards, and impose its physical style of play.
With recent history, contrasting strengths, and early‑season momentum on both sides, tonight’s matchup has all the makings of another compelling chapter in this growing rivalry.
