The Spearfish Lady Spartans (3–2) secured their second Black Hills Conference victory of the season Thursday night, defeating the Hill City Rangers 53–35 behind a dominant defensive performance.
Spearfish forced numerous Hill City turnovers and held the Rangers to a scoring total that matched their season low. Sierra Sandford played a key role in the defensive effort, converting multiple takeaways into points and finishing with 10, earning Superior Performer honors.
The Spartans led 28–16 at halftime after both offenses opened slowly. Spearfish then controlled the middle quarters, outscoring Hill City 32–11 to take full command of the game. Senior guard Kate Scharf, averaging 14.5 points entering the contest, led all scorers with 17.
Senior Tiersyn Grubb added 9 points and anchored the interior with strong rebounding and defensive presence. Spearfish’s full‑court pressure and man‑to‑man defense kept Hill City off balance throughout, a marked improvement from the team’s previous outing against Rapid City Stevens.
Hill City was led by Naiya Ginsback with 9 points and Macie Ham with 8. Leading scorer Lillie Ham was limited to just 5 points.
The Rangers return home next Friday to host defending Class A state champion Sioux Falls Christian. Coverage will be available on YouTube via Hill City Ranger Athletics.
Spearfish travels next Friday to face the Douglas Patriots. The game will air on KDSJ Radio, kdsj980.com, and KDSJ‑TV on YouTube and Facebook.
