The Spearfish Spartans delivered one of their most dramatic performances of the season Saturday, rallying from a 20‑point first‑half deficit to defeat Mitchell 61–55 and snap the Kernels’ 10‑game winning streak.
Spearfish trailed 44–25 early in the third quarter before taking control with a decisive 22‑0 run. The surge flipped a matchup that had been dominated by Mitchell’s offense in the first half, when the Kernels used a 25–2 stretch to build a commanding lead.
The Spartans’ comeback was fueled by eighth‑grader Finley Bouman, who did not play in the first half but scored 14 points after halftime in only her second varsity game. She was awarded the Superior Performer from Superior Auto Solutions in Spearfish. Senior Kate Scharf also finished with 14, while Adelyn Bouman and Anna Eisenbarth added 11 points each. Spearfish had four players in double figures and outscored Mitchell 43–17 over the final 17 minutes.
Mitchell’s offense stalled during a nearly eight‑minute scoring drought that extended into the fourth quarter. By the time the Kernels recovered, Spearfish had pushed its lead to 59–52 in the final minute and held on from there.
Mitchell was led by Londyn Hajek and CeCe Morgan, who each scored 15 points, while Addie Siemsen added 12. The loss ended a streak in which Mitchell had won 35 straight games against Class AA opponents when scoring at least 50 points.
Spearfish improves to 8–5 with the win. They will host Sturgis on Tuesday in their fourth straight home game in two weeks. That game will be broadcast on KDSJ 980 AM, 103.5 FM, KDSJ980.com, the KDSJ Sports Mobile App, and KDSJ-TV on YouTube and on Facebook.
Mitchell drops to 11–4 and returns to action Tuesday at Aberdeen Central.
