The Spearfish Spartans hit the road tonight for an interclass, Black Hills Conference meeting with the Custer Wildcats, looking to keep their strong season rolling as postseason positioning tightens across the state.
Spearfish (12–2) enters the matchup coming off a dominant rivalry win over Sturgis, where the Spartans outscored the Scoopers 53–19 over the final three quarters. Senior Kamren Davis led the way with 21 points, while junior Kade Vavruska added 17, continuing his season‑long streak of consistent scoring. Spearfish’s defense has been a defining strength, holding opponents to limited second‑chance opportunities and controlling tempo through pressure on the perimeter.
Custer, competing out of Region 8 A in Class A, is coming off their third straight win after a 64-45 win vs the Dogies of Newcastle, Wyoming. The Wildcats will look to challenge the Spartans with physical play and disciplined half‑court sets. Custer plays similarly to the Spartans offensively, able to score in multiple ways and typically relying on strong defense and patient offensive possessions. The Cats can hit shots from anywhere on the floor and have multiple scorers who can take over a game.
Tonight’s game provides the Spartans with an opportunity to fine‑tune their execution before returning to a demanding Class AA schedule. Spearfish currently sits near the top of the AA standings and will look to maintain momentum heading into a stretch that includes several key conference matchups.
For the Spartans, maintaining defensive intensity and avoiding turnovers will be central to controlling the pace. A win would mark another step forward in a season where Spearfish has emerged as one of the most balanced and efficient teams in the region. Custer, in pursuit of their fourth-straight win, will try to defend home court and take advantage of a tough home venue to swing momentum early in their favor and make a late-season push for a possible SoDak 16 birth
Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm in Custer. Claysen Davis and Paul James will be on the call on KDSJ-TV on YouTube and on KDSJ’s Facebook Live.
