The Spearfish Spartans (13–2) earned their sixth road victory of the season Thursday night, defeating the Custer Wildcats (5–13) 58–38 in a Black Hills Conference matchup.
Spearfish controlled the game from the opening tip, jumping out to an 18–7 lead before extending the margin to 35–13 at halftime. Junior Kade Vavruska scored eight points in the first half, while senior Kamren Davis added seven as the Spartans’ offense set the tone early. Spearfish continued its strong play into the third quarter, pushing the lead high enough to trigger a running clock.
Custer found offensive rhythm late, outscoring Spearfish 15–4 in the fourth quarter against the Spartans’ reserves, but the early deficit proved too large to overcome.
Spearfish was led by a balanced trio, with Davis, Vavruska, and junior Karsen Seyer each scoring 10 points. Seyer also distributed multiple assists at the rim, earning Superior Performer honors. Senior Brady Virtue led Custer with 11 points.
The loss snaps Custer’s three‑game winning streak. The Wildcats will look to regroup when they travel to Lead‑Deadwood next Thursday as both teams aim to build momentum ahead of regional play.
Spearfish improves to 13–2 and returns home Tuesday for another Black Hills Conference matchup, hosting Rapid City Christian. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on KDSJ 980 AM, 103.5 FM, KDSJ980.com, and the KDSJ Sports Mobile App, with video streaming available on KDSJ‑TV on YouTube and KDSJ Radio on Facebook.
