The Spearfish Spartans (13–2) aim to break a four‑game losing streak to Rapid City Christian when they host the Comets (10–7) tonight in a key Black Hills Conference matchup. Spearfish has not defeated Christian since the start of the decade and looks to close out its conference slate with a signature win on its home floor.
The Spartans enter averaging just under 60 points per game, powered by a balanced offensive core featuring Kade Vavruska, Kamren Davis, Mason Southern, Karsen Seyer, and Cooper Gibbs. Senior guard Bennett Kortan has emerged as one of the top perimeter defenders in the state, routinely holding opposing leading scorers well below their season averages.
Rapid City Christian, led by head coach Kyle Courtney, is coming off a third‑place finish at last year’s Class A State Tournament. Despite graduating one of the strongest senior classes in program history, the Comets have developed new contributors and appear to be playing their most consistent basketball of the season. Courtney acknowledges the early growing pains but believes his team has turned a corner.
Injuries have shaped the Comets’ season, including a significant ankle injury to junior point guard Sully Kieffer, who has now returned to full strength and leads the team on both ends of the floor. Junior forward Peyton Glenn has emerged as the team’s top scorer at 17.5 points per game, while 6’6″ junior Henry Koppman has stepped into a key interior role, providing size and rebounding in the paint.
Rapid City Christian defeated Spearfish decisively last season in what became the de facto Black Hills Conference championship at Hart Ranch. The Spartans, now one of the top teams in Class AA, look to measure their growth against a Comet squad that remains well‑coached and dangerous.
