A Rapid City school nurse has been recognized as the best in South Dakota. Alyssa Downey, who serves students at both Robbinsdale and Grandview Elementary Schools, was surprised with a school‑wide assembly after being named the state’s School Nurse of Excellence.
Downey says she thought she was responding to a routine call when she walked into the gym, only to be met with confetti, cheering students, and Kool & the Gang’s “Celebration” playing over the speakers. During the event, Rapid City Area Schools nurse manager Jill Wilgers read a nomination letter praising Downey’s professionalism, compassion, and her ability to support students with sensitive health needs. The letter also highlighted her role as a trusted adult for many children.
Downey has been with the district long enough to see her first kindergarteners now preparing for middle school. She says her goal is to help students understand their physical and emotional health and learn to advocate for themselves as they grow.
Downey splits her time between the two schools, providing daily care and support to hundreds of students.
