The Spearfish girls basketball team will tipoff the final week of the regular season Friday night when the Spartans host the Yankton Gazelles on Senior Night.
Spearfish enters the matchup at 10–8 and is looking to halt a three‑game losing streak after falling to Rapid City Christian, top‑ranked Brandon Valley, and Harrisburg. The Spartans sit 11th in the Class AA standings and remain in contention for a home playoff game, but will likely need to win out and receive help elsewhere.
Five seniors — Adelyn Bouman, Kali Reiners, Taylor Vitto, Tiersyn Grubb, and Kate Scharf — will be recognized before tipoff. Scharf continues to lead Spearfish offensively, averaging more than 14 points per game while also pacing the team in steals and deflections.
Spearfish’s offensive output has been a defining factor this season: the Spartans are 10–0 when scoring more than 41 points, but winless when held to 40 or fewer. The bench unit, including Sierra Sandford, Anna Eisenbarth, Megan Markovetz, Avery Rauterkus, and Finley Bouman, provided a lift in the loss to Harrisburg and could play a key role again.
Yankton arrives at 7–11, having won two of its last three games, including a 59–46 victory over Tea Area. Junior guard Eden Wolfgram leads the Gazelles in scoring, assists, and steals. Yankton has struggled against winning teams this season but is coming off a dominant 56–24 road win over Brookings.
Defensive pressure and tempo are expected to be central to the matchup. Yankton allows an average of 50 points per game under second‑year head coach Blake Savey, while Spearfish head coach Dakota Johnson says his team must generate turnovers and regain confidence in its transition offense.
Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. The game will air on KDSJ 980 AM, 103.5 FM, KDSJ980.com, and stream on KDSJ‑TV on YouTube and Facebook.
