Black Hills wrestling programs delivered one of their strongest collective showings in years at the 2026 South Dakota State Wrestling Tournament, with Spearfish and Sturgis leading the way and several West River athletes earning state titles, runner-up finishes, and critical podium placements across both the boys and girls divisions.
Spearfish Girls Earn Historic Third‑Place Finish
The Spearfish Spartans girls wrestling team capped a breakthrough season with a third-place finish out of 64 teams, setting a new program record with 104 points. Seven Spartans qualified for state, and six reached the podium.
Two Spartans reached the championship round. Mathilde Matsuda (135 lbs) fell 1–0 to unbeaten Britney Rueb of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon, while Marlee Heltzel (190 lbs) finished runner‑up after an injury default against Watertown’s Allison Konrad.
Spearfish’s depth carried the team into the top three. Morgan Little (105 lbs), Candice Matsuda (130 lbs), and Makita Raysor (145 lbs) each placed fifth, Sydney Badwound (170 lbs) finished seventh, and Haven Baker (115 lbs) also competed.
Sturgis Boys Capture Third Straight Class A Title
The Sturgis Scoopers continued their dynasty, winning their third consecutive Class A boys team championship with 219.5 points. Sturgis crowned one champion — Benjamin Nadig (150 lbs) — who defeated Brandon Valley’s Braden Shoemaker 9–6 in the title match.
Five Scoopers finished as state runners‑up: Sullivan Sigman (106), Tyler Baldwin (120), Mason Hagen (138), Kelson Dirk (190), and Zhoel Irion (215).
Sturgis also added key podium finishes, including Parker Graveman (3rd at 132), Tarver Zebroski (5th at 126), Gavin Werlinger (4th at 175), Tyce Dunn (6th at 113), Josiah Drummer (7th at 144), Jace Thurman (7th at 157), and Tyce Uherka (8th at 285).
Sturgis Girls Add a Champion; Hot Springs Claims Two Podium Spots
The Sturgis girls program crowned a state champion as Annalee Pierson (110 lbs) defeated Aberdeen Central’s Madison Little 3–0. Additional Scooper placements included Jenika Leonhardt (6th at 100), Kaidynce Hand (8th at 115), Brooklynn Baird (6th at 135), and Shelby Werlinger (7th at 145).
Hot Springs standout Sarah Rickenbach captured the 145‑pound girls championship, defeating Yankton’s Winry Yaggie 7–1. Hot Springs also earned a third‑place finish from Katie Snyder (155 lbs) and a fourth‑place finish from Caydan Halls (235 lbs).
Belle Fourche, Harding County Earn Podium Finishes
Belle Fourche celebrated a major highlight as Kyra Vandenberg (100 lbs) secured third place, winning by fall over Stanley County’s Timber Hanson.
Harding County added a top‑three finish as Kanyn Padden (125 lbs) earned third place with a 6–0 decision over Sioux Falls Washington’s Olivia Kolbrek.
Rapid City Central and Stevens Add to West River Medal Count
Rapid City Central earned a state champion in the boys division as Pierce Hurd (113 lbs) completed a perfect 47–0 season with a 4–2 win over West Central’s Kaden Haakinson. Central also reached the girls finals at 140 pounds, where Langston Huffman finished runner‑up to undefeated Quinn Butler of Lemmon.
Central added another podium finish with Dylan Ulmer (150 lbs) taking third place by fall over Pierre’s Jordan Schafer. Rapid City Stevens earned a runner‑up finish in the girls 155‑pound division, where Bella Morteo fell to undefeated Summer Guthmiller of Sioux Valley.

The region produced several more top‑four finishes across both classes:
