The Yellow Jackets swept yesterday and kept the momentum going winning game one today in a pitcher’s duel to clinch the series win, which was their first RMAC series win this season. BHSU relied heavily on their pitching in that one, before falling in the second game of the day for the Cowgirls to avoid the sweep. BHSU got huge games from Kaitlyn Geschwill and Carly Reyes Mims to lead them to victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
- It was a cold and chilly morning in Spearfish as the start time for this game got delayed due to temperature. It started at 11:45 and it started with a bang early. Andrea DeLaTrinidad singled to start and stole second with two outs. Hallie Watkins then doubled and scored DeLaTrinidad to put NMHU up 1-0 early.
- Reyes Mims singled to start the bottom of the first inning and advanced to second on a groundout by Jessica Melendez. Desi Hernandez then doubled her home to tie the game and immediately scored too when Caylee Mann hit a double right after her to give BHSU a 2-1 lead.
- After this inning, that was it, there was no more scoring as Kaitlyn Geschwill completely shut down the Cowgirls lineup only giving up one hit the rest of the game and after pulling Jazmyn Griego after 2.2 innings, Liliana Vigil-German only allowed one hit in 3.2 innings and struck out five. In the top of the seventh, all three batters flew out to end the game and give BHSU the 2-1 win and the series win.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
- DeLaTrinidad and Boswell each singled to start the first inning of game two. A fly out advanced both runners and a single scored the lead runner, while Griego advanced to second on the throw to make it 1-0. A walk by Hannah Hopkins loaded the bases and Cheyenne Ben reached on a fielder’s choice to make it 2-0 as the runner from third scored. Reyes Mims walked to start the bottom of the first and stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on another groundout by Sammie Kaufman-Warner to make it 2-1.
- In the top of the second inning, Giana Marez reached on an error and Yasmin Villa walked to make it runners on first and second. The next two batters grounded out into fielder’s choice that saw both Marez and Villa thrown out at third base to bring up two outs. Hallie Watkins singled to score two runs and make it 4-1 while also advancing to second on the fielding error. Griego doubled to score Watkins and make it 5-1.
- In the bottom of the second, Audrey Fouras walked with one out and scored on a stand-up triple by Brooklyn Theiler. Theiler scored on a wild pitch that allowed Anna Gietzen to reach on a dropped third strike. Both runners were safe on a fielder’s choice by Lily Simmons and they both advanced a base on a wild pitch. Carly Reyes Mims hit a triple to score both runners and tie the game up at 5-5.
- Boswell and Watkins both walked to lead off the fourth inning and Boswell scored on a single from Griego to make it 6-5. That was the last run scored that inning somehow with Desi Hernandez throwing out Watkins at third and Paige Goodell taking over for Poag and then struck out Marez to get out of the inning with the Yellow Jackets falling behind 6-5.
- The fifth inning broke it open again for Highlands as Villa walked and Boswell singled with one out to advance Villa to third and Boswell made it to second on the throw in from the outfield. Watkins singled to score Villa and stole second base with Boswell on third. Griego doubled to score both runners and make it 9-5. Honse replaced Goodell and threw a wild pitch that allowed Griego to reach third and hit Hopkins to send her to first. However, a double steal attempt caught Griego stealing at home and Honse got Jolissa Valdez to strike out to end the inning.
- Geschwill replaced Honse to begin the sixth inning and allowed a one-out walk and single to put two on. A sacrifice bunt moved the runners over and Watkins doubled to score both runners to make it 11-5. In the bottom of the sixth, Theiler singled, Gietzen bunt singled, and Simmons singled to score Gietzen to make it 11-6. That was as close as the Yellow Jackets got as they split Monday’s games and took the series win.
