South Dakota is about to make a little sports history. The Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls will host the state’s first‑ever WNBA game on April 25. The Phoenix Mercury take on the Chicago Sky, with tipoff set for 3 p.m. Central.
Tickets go on sale Wednesday morning at 10 through Ticketmaster.
The matchup will also be a homecoming for Phoenix Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts. Tibbetts grew up in Sioux Falls, played at the University of South Dakota, and previously coached with the Sioux Falls Skyforce. His father, Fred Tibbetts, is a legendary high school coach in the state, with 11 championships to his name. Mercury assistant coach Megan Vogel also has deep local roots as one of the top scorers in South Dakota State history.
As part of the visit, the Mercury will host a youth basketball clinic on April 24 at the Sanford Pentagon. It’s open to girls in grades three through eight and will be led by Mercury players and coaches in partnership with the Sanford Sports Academy. Space is limited.
