The Spearfish Spartans (1-1) opened their 2026 high school baseball season with a 9–5 victory over the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors (1-3) on Saturday at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
Spearfish took control early, scoring in each of the first three innings. Senior Sean Sewell grounded out to tie the game 1–1 in the first, and Darin Crooks followed with an RBI single in the second to give the Spartans the lead. Spearfish added five more runs in the third, including a two-run single by Crooks and a pair of runs scored on Washington errors.
Sewell earned the win on the mound, allowing just one hit and one unearned run over four innings, with two strikeouts and four walks. He was awarded the Superior Performer of the Game. Tucker Olson closed out the game with 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and earning the save.
Offensively, Spearfish totaled 10 hits. Olson, Crooks, and Walker Viessman each had two hits, while Crooks led the team with three RBIs. Jack Scharf drew two of the team’s seven walks.
Washington’s Brekken Biteler drove in two runs, and Dawson Barck went 2-for-3 at the plate. The Warriors drew six walks in the loss.
Spearfish returns to action Thursday with a road game against the Yankton Bucks.
