South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley says the Division of Criminal Investigation is reviewing an officer‑involved shooting that happened Tuesday in Sioux Falls.
Investigators say 36‑year‑old Richard Paul Olson Jr. was wanted on a federal probation violation for possession of a firearm by a felon. Members of the Sioux Falls Police Department’s Violent Crime Unit located him at a gas station. When Olson got out of a vehicle, authorities say he produced a weapon. Two officers fired their guns, and a firearm believed to be his was recovered at the scene.
Olson tried to run, but a police service dog was deployed and apprehended him. He was treated for dog‑bite injuries. No one was hit by gunfire.
DCI is now processing the scene, reviewing evidence and video, and interviewing everyone involved. A summary of the investigation will be released once the review is complete. The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and Highway Patrol are assisting.
This is the second officer‑involved shooting in South Dakota so far this year.
