Lawrence County residents living along secondary county roads can now request magnesium chloride dust‑control treatments after county commissioners approved the cost per gallon at their March 24 meeting.
Commissioners adopted Highway Superintendent John Bey’s recommended rate of $1.38 per gallon, following the county’s award of material bids on March 17. The pricing is formalized through a resolution, a process the county implemented last year to standardize public requests.
“Last year we actually put it into the legal form, so the public can request this service through a form,” Bey said. “It kind of keeps everything on the up and up.”
Residents will be charged only for materials, with the county providing labor and equipment at no additional cost. Bey noted the county generated approximately $13,000 last year from resident‑requested treatments.
He emphasized that the program applies strictly to secondary county roads, not private property. “We don’t chloride every single road, but if people want dust control in front of their homes, this is our way of trying to help out,” he said.
