Most South Dakota commercial driver’s license holders will soon need a valid medical examiner’s certificate to keep their CDL. A new federal requirement taking effect July 1 removes the old “K restriction,” meaning drivers must update their medical certification status with the state before the deadline or their CDL will be downgraded.
To help with the transition, Driver Licensing offices in Brookings, Huron, Mitchell, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spearfish, and Pierre will offer extra Saturday hours this month for CDL updates and paperwork. Some agriculture-related drivers may still qualify for limited exemptions, but they must visit an exam station to update their license.
More information is available on the state’s Driver Licensing website.
