The South Dakota Department of Tourism says demand for this year’s July 3 fireworks celebration at Mount Rushmore has skyrocketed, with more than 102,000 ticket requests submitted for the Freedom 250 event. Only about 4,800 people will be able to attend, with winners chosen through a lottery on Recreation.gov.
Organizers are finalizing the evening program, which will feature fireworks and a light show set to a patriotic soundtrack. A crew of 30 pyrotechnicians and high‑line operators will install the fireworks, working with the same vendor that produced the 2020 display. The contract also includes lighting options in case weather conditions prevent fireworks.
Attendance has been reduced compared to 2020 to improve safety and keep all guests within the main Mount Rushmore campus. The National Park Service has completed an environmental assessment, and officials say protecting the Black Hills remains central to planning for the July 3 celebration.
