The Spearfish Spartans held off a late push from Rapid City Central on Thursday, earning a 6–5 victory in a tightly contested matchup at the Black Hills Power Sports Complex.
Rapid City Central struck early, jumping out to a 3–0 lead in the top of the first inning. Steven Solano opened the scoring with a two‑run shot to left field, and Brody Pourier followed with an RBI single to extend the Cobblers’ advantage.
Spearfish responded quickly, putting up a four‑run second inning to take control. Darin Crooks put the Spartans on the board with an RBI single, followed by a two‑run double from Walker Viessman that tied the game. Jack Scharf added another run with an RBI single, giving Spearfish a 4–3 lead. The Spartans added one more run in the inning to go up 5–3.
Rapid City Central continued to pressure Spearfish throughout the game, but starting pitcher Sean Sewell held firm. Sewell earned the win after working five innings, allowing seven hits and five runs — four of them earned — while striking out six and walking one. Tucker Olson closed the door in the final frame to secure the save.
Offensively, Viessman led the Spartans with three RBIs, finishing 2‑for‑3 at the plate. Crooks, Viessman, and Cooper Chase each recorded two hits, helping Spearfish maintain its narrow lead.
For Rapid City Central, Solano, Pourier, and Asher Jackson each tallied two hits. Pourier finished 2‑for‑3 with three RBIs, continuing his strong start to the season. The Cobblers also turned a double play defensively but were unable to overcome Spearfish’s big second inning.
With the win, Spearfish looks to carry momentum into its next matchup — a game against Stevens tonight at 6:00 pm, on KDSJ Radio, and KDSJ-TV
