Spearfish Varsity 2026 put together two strong offensive performances but came up short in losses to Sioux Falls O’Gorman and Sioux Falls Roosevelt in recent action.
On Friday against O’Gorman, Spearfish dropped an 18-13 decision in a high-scoring contest that featured plenty of offense on both sides. Liv Johnson led the Spartans at the plate, collecting three hits in four at-bats, including a triple and two singles. Spearfish jumped out early, scoring twice in the top of the first inning when Johnson stole home and Vanorah Carlson drove in a run on a groundout.
After O’Gorman tied the game in the bottom of the first, Spearfish briefly regained the lead in the second inning behind a bases-loaded walk to Johnson and an RBI fielder’s choice by Rozlyn Dobson. The Knights responded with a decisive 10-run second inning, fueled by 11 hits, including a bases-clearing single from Sonia Deckert, to swing the momentum.
Despite the setback, Spearfish stayed competitive offensively, finishing with 12 hits. Johnson, Abby Feyereisen, Olivia Lyons, and Emme Johnson each drove in two runs, while Taylor Tennant added a pair of hits. Spearfish also drew six walks in the game, showing patience at the plate.
In their next outing, Spearfish suffered a narrow 8-7 loss to Roosevelt in a back-and-forth contest that wasn’t decided until the final innings. Roosevelt built an early lead, but Spearfish clawed back and tied the game in the fifth inning behind an RBI single from Feyereisen and a run-scoring triple by Tennant.
The Spartans briefly took a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth when doubles by Emme Johnson and Lyons brought home two runs. Roosevelt answered in the bottom of the inning, regaining the lead on a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single.
Feyereisen paced Spearfish with three hits, while Emme Johnson and Liv Johnson each added multiple hits in the loss. Spearfish finished with 12 hits and eight stolen bases, applying pressure on the base paths throughout the game.
Spearfish continues its road stretch with upcoming games at Roosevelt and Brandon Valley, looking to turn strong offensive outings into wins.
