The Spearfish Spartans softball team endured a challenging stretch this week, dropping three games against tough competition from East River in lopsided fashion, at the Ft. Meade Softball Complex in Sturgis.
Spearfish opened the week with a 20-0 loss to Jefferson on Thursday, as Jefferson’s offense proved explosive from the start. A pair of first-inning home runs set the tone, and Jefferson never let up, piling on runs in every inning. The Spartans were held hitless through three innings. Taylor Tennant took the loss after allowing 10 runs over two innings.
Later Thursday, Spearfish fell again, this time 17-3 to Lincoln. The Spartans briefly kept pace early, tying the game in the first inning when Liv Johnson stole home. However, Lincoln pulled away with multi-run innings, including a three-run homer in the fourth and a seven-run outburst in the seventh. Despite the loss, Spearfish showed some offensive life, collecting multiple hits from Olivia Lyons, Johnson, Rozlyn Dobson, and Vanorah Carlson, while also swiping four bases.
The tough week continued Friday in an 18-2 loss to Harrisburg. The Tigers broke the game open with a massive 12-run third inning, highlighted by Haiden Nold’s grand slam. Nold finished with two home runs and six RBIs. Spearfish’s lone highlight came from Liv Johnson, who blasted a two-run homer in the third inning. Tennant again took the loss as Harrisburg racked up 19 hits.
Across the three games, Spearfish struggled to contain opposing offenses but found some bright spots at the plate, particularly from Johnson and a lineup that showed speed and aggressiveness on the bases.
The Spartans will look to regroup and bounce back as they head to Sturgis again for a third crack at the Lady Scoopers on Tuesday.
