Rapid City police have arrested two individuals following a reported gunfire incident at a local park over the weekend.
Officers were dispatched around 7:40 a.m. on May 24th to the park at 300 Omaha Street after reports of a man firing a handgun near the pond. Police quickly arrived and located one suspect, identified as 37-year-old Tommy Bluebird of Rapid City.
A second man fled the scene on foot along a nearby bike path, discarding a firearm during the pursuit. Officers apprehended him after a short chase. He was identified as 39-year-old Jon Caldwell, also of Rapid City.
Authorities say both men are currently on parole. Bluebird was arrested on a parole hold, while Caldwell faces charges of obstruction along with a parole hold. The firearm was recovered, and no injuries were reported.
Police say additional state and federal firearms charges are expected as the investigation continues.
In a statement, Police Chief Don Hedrick noted this marks the second such incident in less than a week involving a parolee discharging a firearm in a neighborhood. He emphasized the department’s commitment to public safety and praised officers for their quick response, adding that he is grateful no one was injured.
