Rapid City police are investigating two separate vehicle burglaries that resulted in stolen firearms, both believed to have occurred overnight.
The first incident was reported around 7:40 a.m. on May 22nd in the 800 block of North Spruce Street. A resident told police their pickup had been entered and a loaded handgun was taken. Officers noted there were no signs of forced entry, and the vehicle had been left unlocked.
A second burglary was reported the following morning, May 23rd, around 7:30 a.m. in the 2700 block of Oak Avenue. In that case, three vehicles were left unlocked overnight and all were entered. A loaded handgun was stolen from one of those vehicles.
Both cases have been forwarded to the Rapid City Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division.
Police are reminding residents that a vehicle is not a safe place to store firearms. Authorities say 10 guns have already been stolen from vehicles in Rapid City so far this year, and they urge gun owners to secure their firearms at all times and avoid leaving them unattended.
