The South Dakota Highway Patrol is stepping up efforts to keep roads safe this summer.
Sobriety checkpoints will be held throughout June in seventeen counties across the state. Those counties include Beadle, Brookings, Brown, Codington, Davison, Day, Fall River, Hughes, Jones, Kingsbury, Lake, Lincoln, Lyman, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, and Yankton.
The checkpoints are funded by the South Dakota Office of Highway Safety and carried out by the Highway Patrol, with assistance from local law enforcement agencies.
Officials are reminding drivers never to drink and drive—even if a checkpoint isn’t scheduled in their area. They encourage anyone planning to consume alcohol to arrange a sober ride, such as a designated driver or other transportation.
Both the Highway Patrol and the Office of Highway Safety operate under the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
