The Sturgis City Council has approved a measure to honor a former mayor by renaming a popular outdoor attraction.
During Monday night’s meeting, council members passed a resolution to rename the Sturgis Downhill Bike Park as the Kevin Forrester Downhill Bike Park.
Forrester, who passed away in April, played a key role in developing the city’s downhill mountain biking facilities on the hillside overlooking Fort Meade. City leaders say he was instrumental in designing and building the park’s first trail, helping establish what has since become a growing destination for riders.
Today, the park features multiple trails and is expected to expand further in the coming years.
Before the vote, Ward Four Councilman Jim Thompson shared remarks reflecting on Forrester’s contributions. Thompson ultimately voiced his support for the renaming.
Council members say the move honors Forrester’s leadership and lasting impact on the community.
