Flash flooding swept through Oglala and nearby communities Tuesday night after a powerful storm dumped an estimated six to seven inches of rain and hail in a short time.
Emergency officials say streets and drainage areas filled rapidly, with water rising in just 35 to 40 minutes. The sudden surge forced several residents to evacuate to the community Recreation Center.
People across multiple neighborhoods reported water reaching their homes and flooding basements. Authorities say clogged culverts made the situation worse, causing water to overflow into yards until crews cleared debris using heavy equipment.
One resident, Jude Little, described the scene, saying he saw widespread flooding and debris, including parts of homes being carried away by the water.
Tribal Emergency Management and the Department of Public Safety continue to assess damage, while the Oglala Lakota Housing Authority is inspecting homes in affected areas.
Officials warn that more storms could develop in the coming days, raising the risk of additional flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
Residents are urged not to drive through flooded roads and to check on neighbors and elders who may need help.
