The Oglala Sioux Tribal Council is calling for the cancellation of a planned Independence Day fireworks display at Mount Rushmore.
In a resolution passed June 9, tribal leaders formally opposed the July 3 event, citing treaty rights, wildfire risks, and concerns over protecting sacred land in the Black Hills.
The council pointed to the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie and longstanding Sioux claims to the region, urging federal agencies to consider their trust responsibilities to tribal nations.
Leaders also raised environmental concerns, warning that fireworks during dry conditions could increase the risk of wildfires in the area.
The resolution passed unanimously among those voting and was signed by Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out. It has been sent to several agencies, including the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden.
As of now, federal officials have not announced any changes to the planned fireworks display.
