Drivers in Rapid City and Spearfish should expect delays and changing traffic patterns as several construction projects get underway this week.
In Spearfish, work begins Monday on a reconstruction project at Exit 10 along Interstate 90. Crews will focus on intersection improvements, new lighting, and adding a “loon” left-turn feature to improve traffic flow. During the first phase, North Avenue will be reduced to one lane in each direction. On-ramps and off-ramps will remain open, but some turning movements will be restricted later this summer.
In Rapid City, construction starts Tuesday on a new traffic signal at the landfill entrance. The project is expected to run through early August and will reduce traffic to one lane in and one lane out. Officials say drivers may experience delays and are encouraged to consider alternative drop-off locations for recycling and yard waste.
Also beginning Tuesday, utility work on North Maple Avenue will reduce traffic to a single lane while crews install new water and sewer services. That work is expected to continue through July 15.
Another utility project will affect Sheridan Lake Road the same day. A one-lane closure is scheduled between Broadmoor Drive and Chancery Lane from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. while a utility pole is replaced.
Officials are reminding drivers to slow down, stay alert, and follow all posted traffic controls in construction zones.
