Firefighters near Johnson Siding responded to an unusual call Friday evening—rescuing a horse that became trapped in a roadside ditch.
The Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department says the incident happened just before six o’clock along Norris Peak Road, when a horse and rider were out for a ride. Officials say the horse lost its footing, fell, and rolled onto its back into a narrow watercourse.
The rider was able to free himself and call for help, but the horse was unable to stand due to the steep sides of the ditch.
Fire crews say the rescue required some creative problem-solving, since equine extrication is not part of standard training. Using straps and a winch, responders carefully repositioned the animal to give it enough space to regain its footing.
The horse’s owner remained nearby to help keep it calm during the operation. Firefighters also cleared a path to allow the animal to safely walk out on its own.
Officials say both the horse and rider escaped without injury. They added that the outcome was especially fortunate, as the department does not have the equipment needed to transport large animals.
The department praised the teamwork and quick thinking of those involved in bringing the situation to a safe conclusion.
