An Interior volunteer firefighter is expressing gratitude to fellow first responders and the community after being seriously injured while battling a wildfire.
Captain John Jessen of the Interior Volunteer Fire Department was hurt June 14 while responding to the South Fork Fire near Crawford, Nebraska. He suffered significant injuries to his right leg, ankle, knee, hip and bicep.
In a public message, Jessen thanked the firefighters and emergency personnel who helped care for him and supported his family during his recovery.
He credited members of his department and several area fire crews, highlighting the dedication and compassion shown throughout his nearly two-week hospital stay.
Jessen also gave special recognition to those who remained by his side, helping coordinate communication and assist his family during the ordeal.
The captain extended his thanks to the broader community as well, including those who contributed to a fundraising effort to help cover medical and travel expenses.
In his message, Jessen praised the strength and professionalism of local firefighters, saying the support he’s received has meant everything during his recovery.
Community members and fellow firefighters continue to rally around Jessen as he heals from his injuries.
