Rapid City crews are increasing mosquito control efforts as activity picks up ahead of Independence Day celebrations. Since May, the city’s Parks and Stormwater Drainage divisions have been treating standing water with mosquito‑control briquettes in parks and drainage areas. More recently, spraying has focused along the Founders Park‑to‑East Boulevard corridor, where big crowds are expected for the Real America Birthday Bash.
Parks Division Manager Scott Anderson says the best thing residents can do is eliminate standing water around their homes — the prime place where mosquitoes lay eggs and larvae grow. The city also recommends using repellent containing DEET and wearing long sleeves and pants when outdoors.
Mosquito control will continue throughout the summer. Residents with questions can contact the Parks Division at 605‑394‑4175.
