Severe storms tore through central and eastern South Dakota early Monday morning, leaving significant damage in several communities, including the town of Highmore.
The National Weather Service reports wind gusts reached up to 131 miles per hour in the area, strong enough to rip roofs off buildings, overturn vehicles, and collapse grain bins and wind turbines. Tornadoes were also reported near Pierpont and Andover.
Power outages were widespread, and officials issued a no-travel order in Highmore as crews worked to clear debris and downed power lines.
Governor Larry Rhoden visited the area Monday as damage assessments began. State officials say they are working to determine whether the storm meets the threshold for federal disaster assistance.
Minor injuries have been reported, and emergency crews, along with volunteers, continue cleanup efforts across the region.
