While many Americans are preparing for Fourth of July celebrations, one Black Hills resident is celebrating a birthday of his own.
Orville the tortoise at Reptile Gardens turned 121 years old this week, making him what staff say is the oldest resident in South Dakota.
Visitors gathered Tuesday to celebrate, singing “Happy Birthday” and watching Orville enjoy a special meal of melons, carrots, and leafy greens. Guests also took part in an Orville-themed cake and raffle supporting turtle and tortoise conservation.
Staff says Orville has become a beloved attraction over the years, living through more than a century of history—including two world wars and now the nation’s upcoming 250th birthday celebration.
