Sturgis police are reminding riders—especially kids and teens—to follow the rules of the road as electric bike use continues to rise this summer.
Officers say they’ve seen a sharp increase in e-bike activity, along with more calls about unsafe riding, including failure to stop at intersections and pulling into traffic unexpectedly.
Under South Dakota law, e-bikes must have pedals and are limited to certain speeds, depending on their class. Police say riders must follow all traffic laws and yield to pedestrians.
Officials are encouraging parents to understand what type of e-bike their child is using and to make sure they know the rules. Helmets are required for some riders under 18, but police recommend them for everyone.
Authorities say their focus is on education, not enforcement, as they work to promote safe riding habits throughout the summer.
