Drivers in Rapid City and Pennington County should prepare for delays as several major road construction projects get underway this week.
Beginning Monday, Old Folsom Road will be closed during daytime hours from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Antelope Creek Road and Lower Spring Creek Road. The Pennington County Highway Department says the closure will continue Monday through Thursday while crews complete road work. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes during those hours.
Old Folsom Road will also be impacted by a separate project near Highway 79. The south shoulder will be closed while crews install a sanitary sewer line. That shoulder closure is expected to remain in place through August 7th.
Meanwhile, pavement preservation work starts Monday on several Rapid City streets, including Cheyenne Boulevard, Three Rivers Drive, Cobalt Drive, Sioux San Drive, Range Road, and others. The largest traffic impact is expected on Cheyenne Boulevard, where the eastbound lane will be closed during construction. The work is scheduled to continue through August 3rd.
Drivers on Knollwood Drive should also expect changes beginning Monday. The westbound lane will be closed for road reconstruction and paving. A detour will direct traffic along North Maple Drive, Disk Drive, and Haines Avenue. The project is expected to last through August 7th.
And the South Dakota Department of Transportation is inviting the public to a meeting on the Interstate 90 Exit 46 reconstruction project near Piedmont. The meeting will be held on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. at Piedmont Valley Elementary School. Officials will provide construction updates and answer questions about the $77.7 million project, which is expected to continue through December of 2028.
