Police in Rapid City have arrested a 22-year-old Box Elder man following reports of gunfire early Monday morning.
According to the Rapid City Police Department, officers were dispatched around 4:25 a.m. to the 100 block of Monroe Street after reports of gunshots in the area. A witness told police they saw a person firing a gun from the window of a pickup truck.
Officers later located a pickup parked in a lot on the 100 block of Waterloo Street. Police say they observed a man get out of the driver’s seat holding a handgun before fleeing on foot. Officers also saw a spent shell casing fall from inside the vehicle.
A foot chase followed, during which the suspect reportedly fell and dropped the firearm. As he attempted to reach for the weapon, an officer secured the gun and took the suspect into custody.
The man was identified as 22-year-old Joseph Stevens of Box Elder. Police say Stevens showed signs of alcohol impairment, and ammunition found in his possession matched shell casings recovered from the area where the shots were reported.
Stevens was arrested on charges of discharging a firearm from a moving vehicle, driving under the influence, and obstruction. He was transported to the Pennington County Jail.
