South Dakota voters are preparing for the state’s first-ever gubernatorial runoff election, scheduled for July 28.
Republican voters will choose between current Governor Larry Rhoden and businessman Tobey Doeden to determine the GOP nominee for governor.
The runoff became necessary after neither candidate received the required 35 percent of the vote during the June 2 Republican primary election.
The deadline to register to vote or change party affiliation is 5 p.m. Monday. Only registered Republicans are eligible to participate in the Republican runoff election.
Absentee voting has been underway since June 12, and voters have until 5 p.m. on July 27 to request an absentee ballot.
The winner of the July 28 runoff will advance to the November 3 general election, where they will face Democratic candidate Dan Ahlers in the race for South Dakota governor.
