The City of Lead is urging residents to take precautions after a black bear was spotted on the outskirts of town in the Kirk area.
The warning comes as black bear sightings continue to rise across the Black Hills. South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks officials say documented sightings have increased dramatically in recent years, with reports now coming from communities including Spearfish, Johnson Siding, and even Rapid City.
Wildlife officials believe multiple bears are currently moving throughout the region rather than a single animal.
Residents are being asked to take steps to avoid attracting bears into neighborhoods. Recommendations include securing trash, removing outdoor food sources such as pet food and birdseed, cleaning grills after use, and staying alert while outdoors.
Game, Fish, and Parks officials say black bears are generally not aggressive toward people. However, bears that become accustomed to finding human food can become more dangerous if those food sources disappear.
Anyone who encounters a bear is advised to remain calm, keep a safe distance, and never approach or corner the animal.
Residents who see a bear in the Lead area are encouraged to report the sighting to the Lead Police Department.
