Firefighters from multiple departments responded to a grass and hayfield fire near Nisland Monday afternoon that burned approximately 20 acres.
According to Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere, the fire began around 4 p.m. and was likely caused by a spark from a piece of farm equipment. The blaze ignited dry vegetation, crossed Highway 212, and spread north into a hayfield.
Fire crews from Spearfish, Whitewood, Belle Fourche, Newell, Vale, and Nisland worked to contain the fire. By Tuesday morning, the fire was under control, although several hay bales continued to burn and crews remained on scene extinguishing hot spots.
Authorities estimate the fire caused about 10-thousand dollars in damage, primarily from destroyed hay bales.
No injuries were reported. One person who reported the fire was evaluated by paramedics but did not require hospitalization.
Sheriff Lamphere says extremely dry conditions continue to create a high fire risk across the region, warning that even normally operating farm equipment can spark a wildfire. He advises residents to carry water in vehicles and avoid driving hot equipment into tall grass.
